jeebowhite. best thing to do is watch it carefully, click it with the switch or fob, it should lift about 1-2mm . If it doesnt and you hear the click, its possible that the solanoid is seized, in which case you will have fun trying to pull back the plastics enough to spray it and lubricate it enough to release it.

I recently picked up a mk2 estate, quite cheap, for a bit of a project car. It is a little scruffy on the inside and the driver's seat has half the upper bolster missing so will need replacing. Are there any other interiors that will fit the mk2 estate, other than a mk2 estate? Do mk2 hatch seats
It does sound like water has managed to find it's way in to somewhere. It was problem with Mk2's as water would get past the rear light clusters. Assuming Ford haven't changed the design too much between the Mk2 and Mk3's then it's the plug in the rear passenger arch which you can get access to by removing the boot liner on the passenger side.
